The authorities of the Benue State Police Command have terminated the employment of Constable Belasa Iyange due to his sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl who was in custody.
While the girl was detained at the Divisional Police headquarters in Tse Agbaragba, Konshisha Local Government Area of the state, Constable Iyange, who pretended to be assisting her, entered the female cell, took her to an office, and engaged in sexual intercourse with her without her consent.
The minor reported the incident to the Divisional Police Officer, leading to the constable’s arrest. Subsequently, the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Makurdi.
Constable Iyange is currently facing prosecution at the Magistrate’s Court in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State. As a result, he has been dismissed by the police authorities.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Bartholomew Onyeka, confirmed the development on Tuesday in Makurdi, emphasizing that the Force is a highly disciplined organization.
The CP said, “The dismissed constable committed the crime at Tse Agbaragba Divisional Police Station, Konshisha LGA.
“Police is a disciplined organ and it is the statutory organ responsible for crime and fighting crime and management. Such persons are not allowed to stay in the system. He was not only dismissed, he is also facing prosecution.”
