The Benue State Police Command has expelled Constable Belasa Iyange after he sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl who was in detention.
While the girl was in custody at the Divisional Police headquarters in Tse Agbaragba, Konshisha Local Government Area of the state, Constable Iyange, who pretended to be assisting her, entered the female cell, took her into an office, and engaged in sexual activity with her without her consent.
The minor reported the incident to the Divisional Police Officer, resulting in the constable’s arrest. Subsequently, the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Makurdi.
Constable Iyange is currently undergoing prosecution at the Magistrate’s Court in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State.
Consequently, police authorities dismissed the constable as he faced litigation.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Bartholomew Onyeka, confirmed the development on Tuesday in Makurdi, adding that the Force was a very disciplined organization.
The CP said, “The dismissed constable committed the crime at Tse Agbaragba Divisional Police Station, Konshisha LGA.
“Police is a disciplined organ and it is the statutory organ responsible for crime and fighting crime and management. Such persons are not allowed to stay in the system. He was not only dismissed, he is also facing prosecution.”
