The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has apprehended an individual in Abuja and charged him with homicide for allegedly causing the death of a man who attempted to open his car, mistakenly believing it to be his boss’s vehicle.
Preliminary police investigations have indicated that both the suspect and the complainant, who had dispatched Benjamin (the deceased) to retrieve his charger from his car, owned similar Toyota Camry cars of the same color, which were parked near each other.
FCT Commissioner of Police, Haruna Garba, made this disclosure during a press briefing on Tuesday while presenting individuals arrested for various offenses. According to Garba, “On September 23, 2023, at approximately 9:15 pm, Mohammed Rabiu of Nyanya reported at Karmo Division that at approximately 9:05 pm on the same day, he sent his boy, Benjamin, to retrieve a phone charger from his car. During this, a man named Shaibu Ibrahim attacked Benjamin, inflicting multiple stab wounds on him.”
“The Police operatives from Karmo Division swiftly mobilized to the scene and rushed the victim to the hospital where he was later confirmed dead. The suspect was arrested and the jack knife used in committing the crime was recovered from him.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect and the complainant who sent Benjamin (the deceased) to pick his charger for him, actually have a similar type of Toyota Camry car, same colors and packed close to each other.
“The deceased mistook the suspect’s car for that of the complainant’s who sent him, hence tried to open the door when the suspect pounced on him without asking questions.”
