Doubt Looms Over Bassey's Participation in Saudi Friendly Match

Calvin Bassey, a key player for the Super Eagles, is facing significant uncertainty regarding his participation in the upcoming friendly match against Saudi Arabia, scheduled for next month, as reported by IWITNESSLIVE Sports Extra.

During Fulham’s Carabao Cup victory over Norwich City on Wednesday night, the left-back was substituted just seven minutes before the end of the game. The match was momentarily halted as Bassey received on-field medical treatment following an injury.

Fulham’s manager, Marco Silva, addressed the situation with the media after the game. He revealed that Bassey had been managing a back injury before this incident. Consequently, his availability for the highly-anticipated West London derby against Chelsea would depend on the careful assessment and monitoring of his condition by the club’s medical team.

The uncertainty surrounding Bassey’s fitness has raised concerns among Super Eagles fans, who are eagerly anticipating the friendly match against Saudi Arabia. The national team will be hoping for a speedy recovery for one of their key defensive players as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures.

While the Cottagers are yet to make any official statement as regards the player’s fitness, there have been growing concerns that the 25-year-old could be out for two weeks, making him a serious doubt for the Eagles game.

Nigeria faces Saudi Arabi on October 13 at the Estádio Municipal de Portimão in Portugal.

Should Bassey miss the Eagles game, he will add to the growing list of injured players as Jose Peseiro is already without Porto’s Zaidu Sanusi.

Bassey’s injury may force Peseiro to invite Jamilu Collins, who hasn’t featured for the Eagles since 2022.

The former Paderborn star had his injury issues, limiting his appearances to 12 games since he joined Cardiff City in the summer of 2022
