Breaking: Cardoso resumes as acting CBN governor

Olayemi Michael Cardoso has officially assumed the role of Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), following his nomination by President Bola Tinubu. However, his appointment is currently pending confirmation by the Senate.

This leadership change at the CBN comes after the resignation of Godwin Emefiele from the position of governor.

According to a statement from the CBN, signed by Director of Corporate Communications Isa AbdulMumin, Deputy-Governors-Designate have also taken on their roles in acting capacities. This follows the resignations of Mr. Folashodun Shonubi, Mrs. Aishah Ahmad, Mr. Edward Lametek Adamu, and Dr. Kingsley Obiora as Deputy Governors of the CBN.

Cardoso and his colleagues recently took their oaths of office in a brief ceremony held at the CBN’s head office in Abuja. They are now responsible for administering monetary and financial sector policies on behalf of the federal government.

Cardoso brings extensive experience to his new role, having served as an Economic and Development Policy Advisor, Financial Sector Leader, former Chairman of Citi Nigeria, and Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos. He holds degrees from Aston University in the United Kingdom and the Harvard Kennedy School in the United States.

These appointments were made on September 15, 2023, with confirmation by the Senate pending.
