Fire service saved N1.5bn properties in Lagos, others in August

The Federal Fire Service Zone F, which includes Lagos, Oyo, and Ogun states, reported that properties estimated at N1.5 billion were saved from fires in the zone during the month of August. The Assistant Controller General and Zonal Commander, Mr. Chika Njoku, shared this information in Lagos.

In August, the zone received 22 fire calls, and they successfully extinguished 13 of them, rescuing 20 individuals during these operations. During the same period, properties estimated at N384.1 million were lost to fires in the three states.

Lagos had the highest number of fire incidents with 14 cases, but they managed to save 12 individuals. In addition to the saved lives, properties worth N1.2 billion were also preserved in the zone.

Oyo had eight fire cases, with eight lives saved, and properties worth N296 million were saved. Ogun did not experience any fire incidents during the month, and there were no fire-related fatalities reported from these states in August.

The reduction in fire calls in August compared to the previous year was attributed to proactive efforts in public awareness campaigns through various media channels to educate the public about the causes and prevention of fire outbreaks.

“The continuous awareness fire campaign run by the Prevention, Regulatory and Inspectorate Unit on fire prevention really helped.

“This was made possible as a result of synergy and working relationship we have built over the years with our sister agencies to assist us in extinguishing fire in areas where we could not reach on time.”

In August 2022, the Federal Fire Service Zone F recorded a significantly higher number of fire incidents compared to August 2023. In the same period of the previous year, the zone reported 39 fire incidents, with 30 cases in Lagos, five in Ogun, and four in Oyo State.

During August 2022, properties estimated at N352.6 million were lost due to fires, while properties worth about N2.2 billion were saved. Eleven individuals were rescued during fire operations, and eight others were saved from different disasters in Lagos State. Properties estimated at N245,370,000 million were lost, while approximately N780,300,000 million worth of properties were saved in 2022.

In Ogun, five fire incidents were recorded, resulting in the loss of properties estimated at N65 million, but properties worth about N1.2 billion were saved. Oyo State had four fire incidents, resulting in one fatality, and properties estimated at N42 million were lost, while about N172 million worth of other properties were saved during the same period in 2022.

The significant reduction in fire incidents in August 2023 compared to the previous year is attributed to proactive efforts in public awareness campaigns to educate the public about fire prevention and safety measures.
