Fuel subsidy: Unilorin to provide free data to staff – VC

Prof. Wahab Egbewole, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, announced on Monday that the university is making arrangements to offer free data to its staff members as a measure to alleviate the impact of the removal of fuel subsidies.

During an interview with journalists in Ilorin, Prof. Egbewole discussed his administration’s commitment to the well-being of both staff members and students, aiming to enhance their productivity. He acknowledged that the challenging economic situation in the country has affected the university community.

To mitigate the effects of the petrol subsidy removal, the Vice-Chancellor assured the university community that his administration is prepared to take various measures. This includes pursuing a rail project to connect the university campus with the town, making commuting more affordable. Additionally, efforts are being made to increase the number of commercial buses available for students and staff members.

Prof. Egbewole also mentioned road rehabilitation projects within the university staff quarters and on the main campus to improve transportation and accommodation plans. Regarding hostel accommodation, the university’s management is working towards providing more bed spaces, with a target of adding at least 1,500 bed spaces in the near future.

“The university has secured a N500 million grant from Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) toward the building of a hostel that would provide more bed spaces for the students.

“Private sectors are also being encouraged to invest more in the provision of more hostel accommodation for the students of the university,” the vice-chancellor said.
