Gombe NBA Establishes Committee to Investigate Police Assault on Chairperson

“Nigerian Bar Association, Gombe State Branch Forms Committee to Investigate Assault Allegation Against Chairman by Police Inspector”

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Gombe State branch, has taken action in response to an allegation of assault made by its chairman, Benjamin Sati, against Inspector of Police Kabiru Ibrahim. The incident occurred when Sati claimed that Ibrahim verbally abused him, labeling him as “stupid” for parking in the wrong space.

Following an emergency congress held on Friday, the branch’s secretary, Abdumutalib Babawuro, announced the resolution to establish a seven-member committee to investigate the matter. The committee has been given one week to define its terms of reference and provide recommendations. Babawuro noted that the committee comprises distinguished individuals from the legal community and is entrusted with the responsibility of addressing the issue impartially.

“We are just coming out of an emergency meeting, and the Congress has unanimously decided to constitute a committee. A committee of seven members will investigate the matter and report back to the members in our next meeting,” Babawuro stated. He emphasized the branch’s expectations for the committee to engage with all stakeholders and deliver a comprehensive report. The committee was granted a seven-day timeframe, as agreed upon by the congress.

Commissioner of Police Oqua Etim expressed dissatisfaction with Sati’s claims, suggesting that the matter should have been handled internally without involving the media. He highlighted that Sati was a bank customer in this instance and should have followed the instructions of the officers on the scene for resolution.

Etim questioned the need for media involvement in a dispute between a bank employee and a customer, emphasizing the importance of addressing such issues through proper channels.
