Seun Kuti’s arraignment for suspected assault on a police officer has been scheduled on September 27 before a Yaba Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos State.
The arraignment of Seun was postponed on Monday due to the absence of the presiding Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Adeola Olatunbosun, who was alleged to be ill.
The musician was apprehended by officers of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCIID) on May 13, 2023, after allegedly assaulting an Inspector of Police, Mohammed Aminu, attached to the Police Training College, Ikeja, while on official business and in police uniform on the Third Mainland Bridge.
On May 16, 2023, the police applied to the court for his remand awaiting the outcome of additional investigation.
Following the conclusion of the police investigation, the defendant was brought before the court for arraignment, which was halted due to objections by his attorney, who told the court that the police could not be both the complainant and the prosecutor on the case at the same time.
As a result, the sitting Chief Magistrate granted the defence team’s pleas and directed the police to transmit the duplicate file of the case to the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.
Mr. Cyril, one of the police attorneys present in court today for the musician’s arraignment, stated that the DPP had urged that he be prosecuted for assault, but neither Seun nor any of his lawyers were there.
As a result, the court registrars scheduled the musician’s arraignment for September 27.
