Niger governor orders employment of qualified healthcare professionals

In a proactive response to the ongoing shortage of healthcare professionals within Niger state hospitals, Governor Mohammed Umar Bago has introduced a new directive aimed at bypassing standard employment procedures for qualified doctors and other healthcare personnel.

The announcement was delivered by Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Binta Mamman, during a media briefing held following the State Executive Council meeting at the Government House.

Recognizing the adverse impact of the healthcare workforce deficit on the efficiency of healthcare services, the state government has initiated this measure to address the pressing issue. The commissioner highlighted that the government is presently evaluating the extent of the staff shortage across various healthcare departments. This assessment will enable them to determine the precise number of healthcare professionals required to effectively bridge the gap.

The Nation Newspaper previously reported on the detrimental effects of health professional brain drain in Niger state, which was adversely affecting healthcare delivery.

It is important to note that there has been a moratorium on employment across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies for the past eight years.

Mamman stated that the waiver’s objective is to expedite the recruitment process, facilitating the inclusion of qualified doctors and healthcare professionals in state hospitals. This move is expected to elevate the quality of healthcare services provided to Niger State residents, ensuring that their medical needs are met efficiently and effectively.

Furthermore, the commissioner disclosed that Governor Umar Bago has issued directives for the full enforcement of the executive ban on illegal mining within the state and the resumption of the monthly sanitation program, effective from September.
