Lagos State Launches Probe into Alleged Extortion by TOCU Officials

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has officially launched an investigation into allegations of extortion by certain Transport Operations and Compliance Unit (TOCU) officials. These accusations stem from incidents where vehicle owners claimed to have been extorted when their abandoned vehicles obstructed traffic.

In a statement released on Thursday by Engr. Abdulhafiz Toriola, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, it was revealed that reports had surfaced regarding the misconduct of some officials who allegedly strayed from their designated responsibilities of issuing removal notices to vehicles causing traffic obstructions in certain parts of the state.

Engr. Toriola stated, “These officers were reported to have apprehended some motorists whose vehicles were impeding traffic flow and engaged in extortion. The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation takes these allegations very seriously, and swift actions have been taken to address the situation. The officials involved in this inappropriate behavior have been apprehended and are currently under investigation.”

He emphasized that such actions do not reflect the ethical standards upheld by the Ministry. The primary objective of the Transport Operations and Compliance Unit (TOCU) is to ensure smooth traffic flow, promote road safety, and enforce compliance with relevant transportation regulations.

Engr. Toriola assured the public that the Ministry is committed to preventing such incidents from recurring. This includes reinforcing proper training and ethical conduct among its officials.

However, he also cautioned vehicle owners to remain vigilant and beware of fake officials posing as members of the now-disbanded Removal of Abandoned Vehicle Committee and TOCU, who may unlawfully apprehend innocent motorists for extortion.

He encouraged the public to report any instances of misconduct or extortion to the appropriate authorities, stressing that cooperation from the community is vital in promoting transparency and accountability.

Toriola commended residents for their vigilance and encouraged them to continue reporting inappropriate conduct. By holding officials accountable for their actions, the Ministry aims to restore trust and confidence in the Enforcement Agencies responsible for ensuring transportation compliance and safety in the state.
