Gabonese army officers, represented by the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions, announced the reason behind their seizure of power from President Ali Bongo on national television. They cited severe institutional, political, economic, and social crises as the catalyst for the “necessary” coup aimed at advancing the nation.
In a translated statement, the junta acknowledged Gabon’s historical tranquility but pointed to ongoing challenges: “Today, our country is grappling with significant institutional, political, economic, and social turmoil. We regret to admit that the August 26, 2023, general elections failed to meet the conditions for an open, credible, and all-inclusive ballot desired by our people.”
The junta criticized the governance characterized by instability and unpredictability, which had led to worsening social harmony and the looming threat of chaos.
“On August 30, 2023, we, the defense and security forces, representing the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions, stand for the people of Gabon and as guardians of institutional integrity, have resolved to secure peace by ending the current regime.”
The junta declared the closure of borders and the dissolution of all national institutions, including the Federal Government, the Senate, the National Assembly, the Constitutional Court, the Economic, Social and Environmental Council, and the Gabonese Elections Centre.
They urged calm among the public, neighboring communities, and the Gabonese diaspora, reiterating their commitment to both national and international responsibilities.
“In this pursuit, we are now on the path to a brighter future. May the blessings of our ancestors and the divine shine upon Gabon. We stand united in loyalty to our homeland.”
