The West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) says it is not clear whose interest the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is protecting if it intervenes in the Niger Republic political crisis.
Ms Nana Afadzinu, Executive Director, WACSI, said this during the West Africa Civil Society Week on Tuesday in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on July 26, a coup d’état occurred in the Republic of Niger when the country’s presidential guard detained President Mohamed Bazoum.
The presidential guard commander general Abdourahamane Tchiani proclaimed himself the leader of a new military junta, shortly after confirming the coup a success.
ECOWAS condemned the detention of Bazoum, calling for his immediate release and reinstatement.
On Aug. 10, ECOWAS announced its intention to deploy a West African force “to restore constitutional order in Niger”, but later reiterated its preference for a diplomatic solution.
