The Nigeria Football Federation has initiated discussions with Jose Peseiro regarding a new contract as the national coach.
“NFF President Ibrahim Gusau revealed on Wednesday that we are currently in talks with him and his legal team as his contract expired in July,” Gusau stated.
Peseiro’s previous contract had a duration of one year. Gusau clarified that the negotiations were delayed due to the rescheduling of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, upon which the contract terms were based.
Scheduled for January and February, the competition’s timing posed a challenge. Despite this, Peseiro has successfully guided Nigeria to qualification with one match still remaining.
Insiders suggest that the NFF aims to secure Peseiro’s agreement to a substantial reduction in his monthly salary of $70,000, under the terms of a fresh contract that would extend at least until the conclusion of the Ivory Coast competition.
“We hope to conclude very soon and a decision will be made based on the recommendations of the technical committee,” said Gusau.
The Super Eagles will complete their qualification journey on September 10 by playing at home in Uyo against Sao Tome and Principe.
Gusau further disclosed that the contract of Randy Waldrum, who coaches the national women’s team, has also lapsed. Waldrum led the team to the Round of 16 in the Women’s World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand.
With the women’s team set to commence their qualification campaign for the 2024 Paris Olympics next month, Gusau emphasized that a decision on Waldrum’s future would need to be made promptly.
