On Tuesday, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State officially introduced the chairpersons and members of three key state entities: the State Anti-Corruption Commission, the State Rent Tribunal, and the State Lands Allocation and Development Rules and Regulations Enforcement Tribunal.
As conveyed by Sulaiman Bala Idris, the Governor’s spokesperson, the inauguration of these government bodies took place at the State Executive Council Chamber within the precincts of the Gusau Government House.
Idris elaborated that the selection and appointment of the chairpersons and members for these three institutions align with the stipulations outlined in Section 4 (7) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).
This constitutional provision empowers the Zamfara State House of Assembly to legislate on matters pertinent to the efficient governance of the state, especially those not included in the exclusive legislative list. It is in line with this authority that the aforementioned Tribunals have been established.
He said: “Governor Lawal charged the chairmen and members of the Anti-corruption, Rent, and Land Allocation Tribunal to discharge their duties diligently with the utmost sense of responsibility, integrity, competence, and trust.
“Section 15 (5) of the Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), as part of the political objectives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, enjoins Nigeria as a nation and invariably States within the Federal Republic of Nigeria to take necessary steps to abolish corrupt practices and abuse of power.
“The Governor also lamented the damage done to democracy and socio-economic well-being by corruption, abuse of office, and misuse of government properties cannot be over-emphasized.
“The chairmen and members of the Tribunal were not inaugurated to witch-hunt anybody for political reasons but to concentrate on how to recover, if any, monies, and properties of the good people of Zamfara State that were allegedly diverted to individual pockets or ownership as the case may be.”
