Manchester City has completed the signing of Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig, securing his services on a five-year contract.
At 21 years old, Gvardiol becomes the second acquisition of the summer transfer window in preparation for the 2023/24 season, following the footsteps of fellow Croatian national, Mateo Kovacic.
Similar to Kovacic, Gvardiol began his professional journey at Dinamo Zagreb, renowned for producing numerous exceptionally talented Croatian players.
During his tenure of two seasons in his home country, he achieved remarkable success, clinching two Croatian League titles, one Croatian Cup, and a Croatian Super Cup, prior to his transition to RB Leipzig in Germany.
Across the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons, Gvardiol made a notable 87 appearances for the Red Bulls, netting five goals and securing two DFB-Pokal trophies.
His international career boasts 21 caps for Croatia, a highlight being his prominent role in their impressive third-place finish during the 2022 World Cup finals held in Qatar.
Gvardiol expressed his excitement about joining the Premier League and eagerly anticipates commencing his journey under the guidance of the new manager, Pep Guardiola.
“I have always dreamed of one day playing in England and to be doing so now with Manchester City – after the season they have just had – is a real honour for me.
“Anyone who saw Manchester City play last season knows they are the best team in the world. To win the Treble says everything you need to know about the quality this team has.
“To be joining City is something very special for me and my family.
“To have the chance to work with Pep Guardiola, too, will be amazing. I know I am not yet the finished article and I am sure my game will progress under the best coach in football.
“To be linking up with Mateo Kovacic will also be special. He’s a top footballer and I hope we can both help City achieve another successful season in 2023/24 and then beyond.”
