TGS-Petrodata has initiated efforts to unlock untapped ultra-deepwater petroleum reserves in the Niger Delta basin, aiming to amplify Nigeria’s energy potential.
The initiative seeks to provide valuable insights into previously undiscovered hydrocarbon resources and shed light on deep and ultra-deepwater petroleum systems.
TGS specializes in offering scientific data and intelligence to energy sector companies. Alongside its extensive global energy data library, the company provides specialized services like advanced processing, analytics, and cloud-based data applications and solutions.
Following the acquisition of a Petroleum Exploration License (PEL) with support from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), TGS has officially begun the Awele South 3D multi-client survey offshore Nigeria. The commencement of this project was previously announced during the TGS Capital Markets Day on March 7, 2023.
Executive vice president for the Eastern Hemisphere at TGS, Ayobami Isaac Olowolayemo, commented that, “TGS-Petrodata has an extensive multi-client data library in Nigeria, including reprocessed 2D seismic and our regional multibeam and seafloor sampling study. We are delighted to expand our footprint with the Awele South 3D survey. Since this project was announced in March 2023, the TGS-Petrodata team has worked diligently alongside the NUPRC, NCDMB, COSL and other stakeholders to ensure successful commencement of the survey.
“As one of Africa’s largest and oldest hydrocarbon producers, unlocking this prospectivity and de-risking drilling operations will further bolster Nigeria’s energy production capacity.
Having insight into the petroleum system of the Niger Delta basin will enhance our understanding of the country’s potential energy resources.”
In full adherence to the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021, this endeavor is geared towards boosting Nigeria’s energy capabilities by offering valuable insights into previously unexplored hydrocarbon reserves and uncovering the profound deep and ultra-deepwater petroleum systems within the Niger Delta Basin.
Dubbed the ‘Awele South 3D 2023’ project, it will encompass an area of around 5,900 square kilometers within the larger designated 56,000 square kilometers Petroleum Exploration License (PEL) area.
With the support of contributions from the industry, the project is projected to span approximately 90 days, with the aim of reaching completion in the fourth quarter of 2023.
