The suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has entered a plea of not guilty to the charges of alleged gun possession brought against him by the Federal Government. The plea was made during a court session at the Federal High Court in Lagos, where Emefiele arrived at approximately 9:20 am.
Emefiele is facing a two-count charge, which accuses him of being in possession of a single-barrel shotgun (JOJEFF MAGNUM 8371) without a valid license on June 15.
The prosecution, led by the Federal Government, asserts that this offense is in violation of Section 4 of the Firearms Act, 2004, and is punishable under Section 27 (1b) of the same Act.
In the second count, the suspended CBN Governor is accused of having 123 rounds of live ammunition (Cartridges) without the necessary license. This charge is contrary to Section 8 of the Firearms Act 2004 and is punishable under Section 27 (1)(b)(il) of the same Act.
