Former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, has filed a N100 billion libel suit against the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The legal action follows what she claims to be false and defamatory statements made against her character and reputation.
Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, who has been residing in the United Kingdom since leaving office, alleges that the AGF and the EFCC made slanderous remarks about her involvement in corruption scandals during her tenure as minister. The former minister insists that these statements have caused significant damage to her personal and professional life.
In the lawsuit filed at the Federal High Court, Mrs. Alison-Madueke is seeking N100 billion in damages as compensation for the harm inflicted upon her reputation. Her legal team argues that the unsubstantiated allegations and public condemnation have had severe consequences on her ability to engage in legitimate business activities and have caused immense emotional distress.
The former minister’s legal team further states that they will present evidence to demonstrate that the accusations made against Mrs. Alison-Madueke were baseless and intended to tarnish her image. They will also challenge the jurisdiction of the AGF and the EFCC to investigate and prosecute her, asserting that their actions have violated her rights as a Nigerian citizen.
The Attorney General of the Federation and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission are yet to release an official response to the lawsuit. Legal experts anticipate a rigorous legal battle in the coming months as both parties present their arguments and evidence before the court.
It is important to note that Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke has been the subject of various corruption investigations and allegations since leaving office in 2015. Several high-profile cases involving allegations of embezzlement, money laundering, and bribery have been brought against her by the EFCC and other international law enforcement agencies. However, no formal convictions have been secured against her to date.
The outcome of this libel suit will have significant implications not only for Mrs. Alison-Madueke but also for the reputation of the AGF and the EFCC. As the legal process unfolds, it remains to be seen how this case will impact public perception and the ongoing efforts to combat corruption in Nigeria.
