President George Opong Weah has penned a congratulatory message to Super Eagles and Napoli forward, Victor Osimhen after setting a new record as the African player with the highest number of goals in the Italian Serie A.
The 24-year-old converted a penalty to score Napoli’s lone goal in their 1-0 victory over Fiorentina on Sunday night, scooping 47 Serie A goals overall, one more than Weah’s 46.
The former Liberia international held the record till Osimhen broke it by scoring 46 goals for AC Milan between the 1995–1996 and 1999–2000 seasons.
Osimhen’s most recent achievement is all the more impressive because he did so in fewer games than Weah, scoring 47 goals in 79 appearances than Weah, who held the record with 46 goals in 114 Serie A games.
He then acknowledged Weah success in a short message sent to the Liberian president. In his response, Weah urged Osimhen to keep breaking more record by becoming the second African to win Ballon d’Or.
“My heartfelt congratulations to you, Victor Osimhen! I am very glad that you have accomplished a major milestone in your football career, after scoring your 47th goal in the Italian Serie A league.
“The records that I set were meant not as a challenge, but as a motivation to you and other African Players. We have the best of talents. You have to remain humble, tenacious, and focused. Don’t be distracted,” he wrote.
