Former Super Eagles striker, Julius Aghahowa, has called on the handler of the national team to extend an invitation to Gent’s poster boy, Gift Orban, ahead of Nigeria’s double header Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea Bissau.
Speaking on a radio programme in Lagos monitored by our correspondent, Aghahowa said the striker deserves a place in the team after his recent performance for his club in both the Belgian Jupiler League and Europe.
On Wednesday, the 20-year-old forward scored a three-minute hattrick as Gent defeated Istanbul Baseksehir 4-1 in the Europa Conference League, just days after scoring four goals in the Jupiler League in a 6-2 away defeat of Zulte Warengem making it seven goals in his last two matches.
”And if he is doing it over there then I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t be called to the national team at least for the U-20,” he said.
“He should be invited so that he can beef up the national team, we have the national team that is being assembled at the moment so he should join them. He is a great asset to have in the national team.”
There has been call for the striker to be invited to the National U-23 team and help the team to succeed in their quest to qualify for the U-23 AFCON.
It, however, remains to be seen if the national team coaches would be ready to invite him and also if his club will be willing to release him, especially to the U—23 camp who at the moment are preparing to take on Guinea in Abuja on March 22.
