The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has hit out at the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, describing him as a fall guy that will be remembered for inflicting hardship, pains and deaths on Nigerians through the illegal currency swap.
The APC PCC Director of Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, reacted to the CBN’s reversal of the unpopular Naira redesigning policy in compliance with the Supreme Court order.
The Supreme Court had ordered that the old N500 and N1,000 notes should remain in circulation till December 31, 2023 but the CBN did not comply with the ruling until 10 days after as it allowed Nigerians to wallow in more pains.
Onanuga on his official Twitter page said, “Godwin Emefiele of CBN ends as the fall guy of the ill-conceived, illegal currency swap in our nation’s history. He will be remembered as a sadistic, wicked boss of the bank who inflicted unprecedented hardship on our people, causing anger, pain, and deaths.”
The Iwitnesslive had reported that Acting Director, CBN Corporate Communications, Isa AbdulMumin, issued a statement confirming that the old N500 and N100 are still legal tender.
The statement reads: “In compliance with the established tradition of obedience to court orders and sustenance of the Rule of Law Principle that characterized the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, and by extension, the operations of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), as a regulator, Deposit Money Banks operating in Nigeria have been directed to comply with the Supreme Court ruling of March 3, 2023,” the statement reads.
“Accordingly, the CBN met with the Bankers’ Committee and has directed that the old N200, N500 and N1000 banknotes remain legal tender alongside the redesigned banknotes till December 31, 2023.
“Consequently, all concerned are directed to conform accordingly.”
