Nigeria’s entertainers and 2023 elections

As the 2023 Elections draw near, several celebrities have declared their support for different presidential candidates.

Celebrities have urged citizens to use their PVCs wisely and at the same time they go to social media platforms to endorse their preferred candidates.

According to recent research, we have been able to gather some highlights of some Nigerian celebrities that have been verbal about their preferred presidential candidate.

Joke Silva

Joke Silva is a Nigerian actress, director, and businesswoman.

In 1998 she had a major role, starring opposite Colin Firth and Nia Long in the British-Canadian film The Secret Laughter of Women.

In 2006, she won “Best Actress in a Leading Role” at the 2nd Africa Movie Academy Awards for her performance in Women’s Cot, and “Best Actress in a Supporting Role” at the 4th Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2008 for her performance as a grandmother in White Waters.

Silva is married to actor Olu Jacobs. The couple founded and operate the Lufodo

The veteran has pitched her tent with the All Progressives Congress  and its presidential candidate  Asiwaju Bola  Tinubu. She has been seen at the APC rallies several times.

 

Peter and Paul Okoye (Psquare):

P-Square is a Nigerian music duo consisting of the twin brothers Peter Okoye and Paul Okoye. They produced and released their albums through Square Records (now Square Root Entertainment)

In December 2011, they signed a record deal with Akon’s Konvict Muzik label. In May 2012, P-Square signed a record distribution deal with Universal Music South Africa.

Peter and Paul have never been shy to let the world know that they are supporting the candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi. They were recently part of the Labour Party Lagos Mega Rally and even clashed with Afrobeats icon Seun Kuti over Obi.

Brymo:

Ọlawale Ọlọfọrọ popularly known as Brymo, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, actor and author. He started recording music in 1999 while in secondary school. He signed a record deal with Chocolate City in 2010 but was accused of breaching his contract with the label in 2013.

Brymo has openly declared his support for Asiwaju Tinubu, and several times he has informed people of his choice, in fact, he is the one that gave the former Lagos Governor the nickname ‘City Boy’.

Mr Macaroni:

Adebowale “Debo” Adedayo known by his stage name Mr Macaroni, is a Nigerian actor, content creator and citizen activist.

A trained thespian, his popularity grew from his comic skits on social media, where he plays the role of a political figure cum sugar daddy called “Daddy Wa” or a sadistic lecturer called “Professor Hard Life”. Debo popularized catchphrases like “Ooin”, “Freaky freaky” and “You are doing well”.

Using his satirical works and online presence, Debo is also known for his social justice advocacy. His skits satirize social issues to promote human rights and critique everyday social interactions.

Mr Macaroni has also openly declared his support for Peter Obi.

 

Olaiya Igwe:

Ebun Oloyede popularly known as Olaiya Igwe is a veteran Nollywood actor, producer and director.

Olaiya is a native of Ogun State and in 2022, He graduated from Crescent University, Abeokuta, Nigeria.

The veteran Yoruba actor is one of the outspoken supporters of Asiwaju Tinubu, he has done a campaign video for the former Lagos state governor several times.

 

Mercy Eke:

Mercy Eke is a Nigerian media personality, actress, video vixen and entrepreneur from Imo State. She won season 4 of Big Brother Naija in October 2019, becoming the first woman to win the reality show. She is the founder of Mnm luxury.

Also known as Mercy Lambo, Mercy Eke revealed that she dreamt Peter Obi won the election weeks after declaring his support for the Labour Party Candidate.

Funke Akindele:

Olufunke Ayotunde Akindele-Bello popularly known as Funke Akindele or Jenifa, is a Nigerian filmmaker, director, actress, politician and producer.

Akindele starred in the sitcom I Need to Know from 1998 to 2002, and in 2009, she won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. She rose to fame for her role in the movie titled Jenifa.

Funke Akindele is the Deputy to the Gubernatorial Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party in Lagos State.

Now From this, we can confidently say that she will be supporting her party’s presidential candidate which is Atiku Abubakar.

Uche Jombo:

Uche Jombo Rodriguez is a Nigerian actress, screenwriter and film producer.

She was born on December 28, 1979, in Abiriba, Abia State, Nigeria. She is a graduate of Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Calabar and Computer Programming from the Federal University of Technology Minna. She was once married to an American named Kenny.

She has thrown her weight behind the Obi/Datti movement ahead of the 2023 election.

Fathia Balogun:

Faithia Williams is a Nigerian actress, filmmaker, producer and director.

Faithia who is of Delta state descent attended Maryland Primary School and Maryland Comprehensive Secondary School in Lagos state. She obtained her West African School Certificate in Maryland Comprehensive Secondary School. After that, she studied in the Kwara State Polytechnic for a diploma certificate.

In 2016, Faithia got admission into Olabisi Onabanjo University to study Filming.

Fathia has pitched her tent with Asiwaju Tinubu, she was part of those who made a campaign video for the APC candidate.

 

Kate Henshaw:

Kate Henshaw, also known as Kate Henshaw-Nuttall, is a Nigerian actress. In 2008 she won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in the movie Stronger than Pain.

Kate Henshaw is unapologetically a proud supporter of Peter Obi.

Femi Adebayo:

Femi Adebayo Salami is a Nigerian film director, film actor, lawyer producer and Special Adviser to the Governor of Kwara State on Arts, Culture and Tourism. He is the son of the veteran actor Adebayo Salami.

Femi Adebayo is supporting Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

 

Patience Ozokwor

Patience Ozokwor is a Nigerian veteran musician, fashion designer, gospel singer, and actress. She won the Best Supporting Actress 2012 & 2013 award at the 10th Africa Movie Academy Awards.

She is known for taking the role of a wicked woman in some of her movies. Patience Ozokwor was among the top 100 Nigerians Honored by the government to celebrate the amalgamation of the northern and southern protectorates in 2014.

Patience Ozokwor is another celebrity who has also declared her support for Peter Obi.
