Mexico pips Super Falcons 1-0 in Revelation Cup opener

By David Kabiyesi

Nigeria Super Falcons failed to find the net as coach Randy Waldrum-side suffered a 1-0 loss to La Tri of Mexico in the ongoing Revelation Cup tourney played in the early hours of Thursday.

The host set the ball rolling right from kick-off and almost scored five minutes into the match only for Rasheedat Ajibade to make an early clearance. Tony Payne got a chance to put Nigeria ahead few minutes later but missed a sitter.

Mexico’s biggest chance of the match went begging after Lizabeth Ovalle missed a golden opportunity in the 34th minutes of the match. Nigeria then lost Rofiat Imuran to an injury few minutes before half-time break but the coaching crew dug deeply into their tactical books of tricks and replaced her with Glory Ogbonna.

Playing without Barcelona striker, Asisat Oshoala, coach Randy Waldrum introduced Uchenna Kanu and Jennifer Echegili after resumption as Francesca Ordega and Chinwendu Ihezuo struggled to stamp their authority on the match.

Th match seems to be heading for stalemates until Kiana Palacios scored the only goal of the match in the 84th minutes to confine Super Falcons to their first defeat in the invitational tournament.

Nigeria will face Colombia on Saturday.
