The Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for an investigation into alleged political violence, intimidation and harassment by persons linked to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The party, in a statement issued on Wednesday, also urged security agencies to protect opposition members reportedly facing threats and ensure that political parties operate freely in the state.
The NDC’s Edo Central senatorial candidate and Director-General of the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement, Mr. John Yakubu, said several incidents had been documented, including the arrest of members, vandalism of campaign offices, disruption of meetings and destruction of billboards.
He also cited an alleged shooting at an African Democratic Congress (ADC) gathering in Igueben, which reportedly left several members seriously injured.
The party further alleged that one of its members, Mr. Maxwell, had been threatened over his support for the NDC and the use of his hotel in Illeh-Ekpoma for party meetings.
It also claimed that commercial drivers and motorcycle operators in Esan North-East and Esan West were being pressured to wear APC-branded caps to conduct their businesses.
The NDC demanded an investigation into a statement allegedly attributed to APC State Chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, concerning the use of AK-47 rifles against opposition members during the 2027 elections.
It urged Tenebe and the APC leadership to clarify the reported remarks and condemn political violence.
The party called on Governor Monday Okpebholo, the police, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant authorities to investigate the allegations, protect threatened individuals and prosecute anyone found culpable.
It also urged civil society organisations and the media to document reported incidents, while advising its supporters against retaliation.
“Edo belongs to all its citizens. No party stands above the law,” the statement declared.
