NISO Stabilises National Grid After Multiple Trippings

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has announced the stabilisation of the national electricity grid following multiple trippings on the 330-kilovolt (kV) transmission network on Monday.

The system operator disclosed that the incident occurred at approximately 12:40 p.m., triggering disruptions on a section of the transmission network before corrective measures were implemented to restore normal operations.

In a press release issued on Monday, NISO said it worked with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to stabilise the power system and restore normal grid operations following the incident.

According to the operator, restoration efforts have been successfully completed, and the national grid has returned to normal operation.

NISO, however, clarified that the incident affected only a section of the grid, dismissing unverified reports and claims circulating in the media suggesting a wider disruption.

“The incident affected only a section of the grid,” the system operator stated, urging members of the public to disregard misleading information and rely on its official communication channels for accurate updates on the status of the national grid.

The latest incident shows the operational challenges that can arise on Nigeria’s high-voltage transmission network, which transports electricity generated by power plants to distribution companies for delivery to consumers.

Trippings on transmission lines or associated equipment can interrupt power flows across affected sections of the network and, depending on the scale and location of the disturbance, may affect electricity supply to connected areas.

However, NISO did not disclose the specific transmission lines or facilities involved in Monday’s incident, the number of affected locations, or the quantity of electricity supply interrupted during the event.

The operator also did not provide details of the technical causes of the multiple trippings or indicate whether any generating units were affected.

NISO said it remained committed to maintaining grid stability, ensuring the reliable operation of the national electricity transmission system, and providing timely and accurate information to the public.

The operator advised electricity consumers and other stakeholders to obtain verified information on grid operations through its official communication channels.
