The Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare (FUHSA), Bauchi State, has recorded a major milestone in medical education with the graduation of its pioneer students at its maiden convocation ceremony.
The Chancellor of the university and Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama’ila Muhammed Mera, CON, described the ceremony, held on Saturday, October 17, 2026, as the beginning of a lasting legacy in healthcare education and human capital development.
Mera said FUHSA had distinguished itself among federal universities of health sciences established around the same period by becoming the first to graduate its pioneer students.
He attributed the achievement to the commitment and dedication of the Governing Council, Management, Senate, and academic and non-academic staff under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor.
The Chancellor also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to tertiary education and human resource development.
He acknowledged the support of Bauchi State Governor, Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed; Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum; the Kebbi State governor; the Emir of Katagum, Alhaji Umar Farouk II; and other traditional rulers.
Addressing the pioneer graduates, Mera said their names would remain permanently associated with the institution’s first graduating class.
“You are not simply graduates of this University; you are its first ambassadors into the wider world,” he said.
He urged them to demonstrate integrity, compassion, discipline, and commitment to lifelong learning in their professional careers.
According to him, healthcare professionals must combine technical competence with compassion and integrity to serve patients and communities effectively.
“In the health professions, knowledge without compassion is incomplete, and professional competence without integrity can never adequately serve humanity,” he added.
The Chancellor further challenged the university to build on the achievement by developing into a centre of excellence in health education, medical research, innovation, and community health services.
He congratulated the parents, guardians, and families of the graduates for their sacrifices and support, while expressing optimism about the institution’s future.
At the ceremony, the university also conferred an honorary doctorate degree on the Chancellor, who described the recognition as a call to greater service and advocacy for the institution.
