The Lagos State Government will launch multilingual media campaigns throughout October to educate residents on cybersecurity and protect them against online fraud and other digital threats.
The campaigns, to be conducted in English, Yoruba and Pidgin English across social media and traditional media platforms, will focus on identifying phishing scams, creating strong passwords, enabling multifactor authentication and regularly updating digital devices.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, disclosed this in a statement on Monday to mark the 2026 Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
According to the statement, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu urged Lagos residents to take responsibility for their online safety, warning that inadequate knowledge of digital security practices leaves many vulnerable to cybercriminals.
“Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility. Citizens must remain vigilant, understand common cyber risks, and take proactive steps to protect themselves from cybercriminals,” the governor said.
Sanwo-Olu emphasised the importance of public education in tackling cybercrime, noting that many victims were unaware of basic digital safety practices.
The awareness campaign will be coordinated by the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology and the Cybersecurity Advisory Board, led by Prof. Fene Osakwe.
Omotoso said the initiative aligned with global efforts led by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to promote safer digital practices, strengthen cyber resilience and empower citizens to protect themselves online.
He added that the state had pursued cybersecurity initiatives over the past three years through the ministry and the Cybersecurity Advisory Board to strengthen digital trust and improve the security of government institutions, businesses and residents.
As part of these efforts, Lagos launched the Lagos State Cybersecurity Guidelines earlier this year to provide practical security measures for small, medium and large businesses.
The guidelines outline scalable best practices to help organisations protect their digital assets and manage cybersecurity risks.
The state has also expanded cybersecurity training, public awareness and professional development programmes across public institutions.
According to the statement, Lagos is working towards milestones, including ISO 27001 certification, as part of efforts to strengthen information security management and safeguard critical digital infrastructure.
The government urged residents to remain alert to emerging cyber threats and adopt safer online habits, describing cybersecurity as essential to building a secure, innovative and resilient digital economy.
