Nigerian entertainment has lost one of its most respected veterans, Olu Jacobs, who has died at the age of 84.
His son, Olusoji Jacobs, announced the death on Instagram on Wednesday, describing his father as “The Lion of Lufodo” and asking bloggers and social media influencers to respect the family’s privacy at this difficult time.
Born Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, Olu Jacobs built a remarkable career that covered theatre, television and film. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and began his career in British television before returning to Nigeria, where he became one of the most recognisable faces in the country’s film industry.
Over the years, Jacobs appeared in many Nigerian and international productions and received several major honours for his contribution to the entertainment industry, including the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Africa International Film Festival.
Away from acting, Jacobs was also involved in the business side of entertainment. Together with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, he was involved with the Lufodo Group and contributed to the growth of the performing arts in Nigeria.
For generations of Nigerians and African film lovers, Olu Jacobs was more than an actor. His powerful performances and long career made him one of the familiar faces of Nigerian entertainment.
