Veteran journalist and founder of Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, has died at the age of 56.
Oladipo reportedly took ill suddenly at his office in Lagos on Tuesday and died hours later at a hospital where he had driven himself.
His death was confirmed by the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, where he served as a former president.
The President of GOCOP, Danlami Nmodu, announced his death on the guild’s WhatsApp platform on Tuesday night.
“It has just been confirmed that Emeritus President, Mr Dotun Oladipo, died today. May his soul rest in peace. Amen,” Nmodu wrote.
Oladipo was also the founding president of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society.
The General Secretary of IMPCMS, Nkanu Egbe, announced his death on Wednesday, describing it as a major loss to Nigerian journalism.
“It is with profound sorrow that I announce the sudden death of our President, Mr Dotun Oladipo, who passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Lagos, at the age of 56,” the statement said.
The cooperative described Oladipo as a dedicated leader whose journalism career spanned nearly three decades.
“His passing is a devastating loss not only to IMPCMS but to Nigerian journalism as a whole,” it added.
Oladipo was the Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Limited and had a long career in the Nigerian newspaper industry.
He was a former Politics Editor of PUNCH Newspapers and also worked with the Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass and The Sun before establishing Eagle Online.
His death has sparked reactions within the Nigerian media community, with colleagues and professional bodies mourning a journalist who played a significant role in the growth of Nigeria’s online publishing industry.
The IMPCMS Executive Committee said details of his burial arrangements, condolence visits and interim leadership would be announced later.
Members were also urged to pray for the deceased’s family during the period of mourning.
