President Bola Tinubu has thrown his weight behind a technology-neutral approach to Nigeria’s energy transition, pledging the Federal Government’s full support for the newly inaugurated World Energy Council (WEC) Nigeria as a platform to deepen policy dialogue, attract investment and accelerate innovation across the energy sector.
Tinubu noted that Nigeria’s admission as the newest National Member Committee of the century-old World Energy Council represents more than international recognition, describing it as an opportunity for the country to champion balanced energy policies that prioritise security, affordability and sustainability.
He also congratulated the inaugural leadership of WEC Nigeria, comprising of a Chairman, Mr. Abdulrazaq Isa, Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Bala Wunti, and other board members drawn from the energy industry, regulatory institutions, finance, academia and the Future Energy Leaders community.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga on Friday in Abuja, the President said the diverse composition of the board gives the new body the neutrality and credibility required to foster consensus and advance Nigeria’s energy agenda.
He described Isa as “a distinguished patriot
and trailblazing industrialist” whose investments in indigenous refining and industrial energy have expanded opportunities for Nigerian enterprise.
Tinubu also hailed Wunti as “one of Nigeria’s finest energy strategists and reform champions,” noting that his more than three decades of service have produced reforms that boosted government revenue and restored investor confidence in the energy sector.
According to the President, Nigeria’s membership of the World Energy Council places the country in a stronger position to influence international conversations on energy security, equity and sustainability.
He said: “Nigeria has joined the World Energy Council to lead, not just participate – to ensure Africa’s voice shapes global energy decisions.”
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting WEC Nigeria as a technology-neutral platform capable of bringing together policymakers, regulators, investors and industry players to advance practical energy solutions without prescribing a single technology pathway.
He added that the Federal Government would work closely with the World Energy Council’s global network to promote secure, affordable and sustainable energy while wishing the new leadership success in steering the organisation’s historic mandate in Nigeria.
