The Bauchi State Government has appealed to development partners and donor agencies for urgent support following the official declaration of a cholera outbreak that has claimed 16 lives and affected 13 Local Government Areas.
The appeal was made by the Commissioner for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Sani Mohammed Dambam, in an outbreak notification announcing that the state had recorded 398 suspected cholera cases as of July 31, 2026.
The commissioner said laboratory investigations had confirmed six PCR-positive cases of Vibrio cholerae O1 Ogawa, meeting national and international requirements for an official outbreak declaration.
He noted that Toro LGA has recorded the highest number of suspected infections with 231 cases, while Alkaleri and Kirfi have reported 46 cases each. Ganjuwa has 21 cases, while Bauchi and Tafawa Balewa LGAs have recorded 14 cases each.
According to him, the state has already activated emergency response mechanisms, including deployment of Rapid Response Teams, improved disease surveillance, strengthened treatment centres, and expanded water, sanitation and hygiene interventions.
Dr. Dambam urged donor agencies and development partners to provide additional resources and technical expertise to support the government’s efforts to contain the outbreak and protect vulnerable communities from further infections.
