The wife of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Osun State, Dr. Mrs. Sekinat Oyebamiji, and the wife of the party’s deputy governorship candidate, Princess Abimbola Adereti, on Sunday evening escaped unhurt after suspected hoodlums attacked their convoy in Ede South Local Government Area of the state.
The incident, which was confirmed by the Chairman of Ede South Local Government, Hon. Kolawole Salami, reportedly occurred at about 7:00 p.m. around Alajue and Sekona Garage as the women and members of their entourage were returning from a political programme held in Alajue Ward 2.
Salami, in a statement made available to journalists, said the convoy came under attack shortly after the event, adding that the two women narrowly escaped the assault.
According to him, the Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Sekona Branch, sustained serious head injuries during the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment.
“We thank Almighty God that neither Dr. Sekinat Bola Oyebamiji, Princess Abimbola Adereti, nor any member of their entourage sustained injuries despite the incident,” the council chairman stated.
He alleged that preliminary reports identified some individuals believed to be members of the Accord Party as those behind the attack and listed their names, urging the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
Salami condemned the attack, describing political violence and intimidation as unacceptable in a democratic society.
He called on all political stakeholders to uphold peace and ensure that the forthcoming governorship election in Osun State is conducted in a peaceful atmosphere.
As of the time of filing this report, the Accord Party had not responded to the allegations, while the Osun State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
