Former Director General of Progressives Governors’ Forum, Salihu Lukman and former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Nnena Ukeje, and other members of opposition group, have called on presidential candidates of opposition political parties, to unite and field a common candidate in the 2027 presidential election.
The group under the aegis of G100, wondered how opposition leaders could hope to win the 2027 presidential election of they are divided.
“How does a fractured opposition expect to defeat a ruling party if it cannot first unite around a common purpose?” they asked.
The G100 proposed to convene a National Council of Opposition Leaders within the next two weeks, to bring together opposition leaders from across the country to negotiate a common programme, strategy and a united path towards the emergence of a single presidential standard-bearer in next year’s presidential election.
“The meeting will also reaffirm the spirit of the Ibadan Declaration as the basis for building a stronger and more coordinated opposition ahead of 2027,” they declared in a statement.
According to the group, the initiative is not intended to promote any individual candidate or political party, but to safeguard democratic competition, strengthen democratic institutions and ensure Nigerians are presented with a credible alternative capable of renewing confidence of Nigerians.
They urged opposition presidential candidates to rise above personal ambition and negotiate a united front for the 2027 elections.
“The hour is too grave for scattered ambition and private calculation.
“Nigeria cannot be rescued by opposition leaders who march separately toward the same defeat,” the G100 warned.
