The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, and AKADEMIYA2063, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to deepen collaboration in artificial intelligence, climate and weather data analytics, and climate information services.
Prof. Charles Anosike, Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative with the World Meteorological Organization, signed on behalf of the agency at the NiMet headquarters, Abuja.
Dr. Debisi Araba, Managing Director of AKADEMIYA2063, and Dr. Racine Ly, Director of Data Intelligence and Governance and National Representative for Senegal, signed for AKADEMIYA2063.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Anosike said NiMet was positioning itself for the future through digital innovation.
He disclosed that the agency had already set up an AI Research Team to explore the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in weather forecasting, climate services and operational efficiency.
He added that the partnership with AKADEMIYA2063 would strengthen those efforts and expand NiMet’s capacity to deliver timely and accurate climate information.
Dr. Araba described the MoU as a significant step toward building Africa’s capacity in data, analytics and evidence-based policymaking.
He said combining AKADEMIYA2063’s expertise with NiMet’s meteorological capabilities would produce practical solutions for climate resilience, food security and sustainable development.
Under the agreement, both organisations will collaborate on the application of AI to support climate monitoring, seasonal forecasting, early warning systems and evidence-based decision-making.
The goal is to strengthen AI-enabled climate services and improve agricultural planning in Nigeria.
To drive implementation, NiMet and AKADEMIYA2063 will set up a Joint Technical Committee. The committee will work with NiMet’s AI Research Team to identify priority areas, coordinate activities under the MoU and develop joint initiatives in climate services, AI research and innovation.
