Argentina captain Lionel Messi has said he expects a fiercely contested encounter when his side faces Spain in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday.
The Inter Miami star spoke after inspiring Argentina to a 2-0 victory over England in Wednesday’s semi-final, a result that secured the Albiceleste’s place in the tournament’s final.
Messi admitted Spain would be one of the toughest opponents Argentina could face, describing the European champions as a team blessed with quality players and a well-established style of football.
“They are a tremendous team, with outstanding players. They play excellent football,” Messi said after the match.
“I know the Spanish side well, and they have a style of play they have developed over many years.
“Several of the squad play for Barca, a club that means a great deal to me and that I still keep up with.
“It will be a special World Cup final, and obviously, I expect it to be very closely matched.”
