June 12: PDP Factions Disagree On State Of Nigeria’s Democracy

Factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) present different positions on democratic governance in Nigeria as the country mark 27 years of uninterrupted democracy.

While the faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, encouraged Nigerians not to lose hope in the face of challenging political and economic challenges, the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led faction, called on the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Federal Government to act responsibly to uphold democracy in the country, guarantee civil rights, peaceful assembly and protest, and protect the democratic rights of the opposition.

The FCT minister’s faction in a statement by the spokesperson, Jungudo Mohammed, commended Nigerians for their resilience, patriotism, and unwavering commitment to democratic governance despite prevailing challenges.

“As the nation marks this important national milestone, the PDP urges Nigerians not to surrender to despair but to remain hopeful and steadfast in the democratic process,” Mohammed said.

He stated that democracy remains the nation’s strongest guarantee for accountable leadership, national development, and the protection of citizens’ rights.

“The challenges confronting our nation are temporary and surmountable.

“Through responsible leadership, strong democratic institutions, and the collective resolve of the people, our nation can overcome its present difficulties and achieve lasting peace, prosperity, and progress.

“Together, through unity, resilience, and active civic participation, we can build a stronger, more prosperous, and inclusive nation,” the faction stated.

The Turaki faction in its statement by the National Publicity Secretary of Interim National Working Committee (INWC) Ini Ememobong, noted that 33 years of June 12 presidential election, democracy under APC-led Federal Government has suffered setback.

The faction regretted that people could not be allowed to expressed their grievances through peaceful protest, noting that peaceful protesters were teargassed on the day set aside by the country to honour the blood of democratic martyrs.

“Omoleye Sowore was reportedly injured and hospitalised for doing nothing more than demanding the immediate release of schoolchildren and teachers held hostage across different parts of the country.

“This Tinubu administration unashamedly
prioritises optics over action, propaganda over policy, and dwells in a dangerous utopian self- delusion.

“Their disposition to governance has reduced this sacred day to a mere historic
remembrance, rather than being a celebration of democratic consolidation,” the PDP said.
