INEC Fixes June 16, 17 For Party Primaries In Suppressed Constituencies

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has directed registered political parties to conduct their primaries in some suppressed constituencies in four states between June 16 and 17.

The states are Benue, Delta, Jigawa and Kogi.

Party primaries in the about 23 constituencies which span the four states, according to INEC, were suppressed for various reasons.

The commission in a statement by National Commissioner Muhammed Kudu Haruna who doubles as Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, said it was in pursuant to the judgment of the courts, which directed the restoration of these suppressed constituencies.

Haruna stated that INEC, in line with the powers conferred on it by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2026, has directed political parties to conduct primaries to nominates for 2027 general election.

The constituencies include five in Benue, six in Delta, one in Jigawa and 10 in Kogi.

He explained that all other timelines and activities contained in the already published revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election shall apply to the restored constituencies.

The National Commissioner requested the political parties to submit notices of their primaries to the commission prior to the scheduled date for the primaries, and pledged INEC’s commitment to ensuring credible, inclusive and transparent electoral processes.
