DSS uncovers plans to abduct schoolchildren in Edo, arrest one suspect

The Department of State Security, DSS, Edo State Command has uncovered a plot to abduct school children in Edo North Senatorial district.

The secret police also arrested one suspect, Emmanuel Momidu (25yrs) who was apprehended while allegedly conducting surveying at Makeke Secondary School in Makeke, Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo State.

The Service in a statement signed by B. Agada on behalf of the State Director,and addressed to the State Commandant, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps said plot of mass abduction of school children by bandits was uncovered during an interception of conversation between one Bawa from Zamfara State and of Fulani extraction and one Nuhu.

The statement disclosed that plans to carry out the mass abduction of children was because previous attempts to kidnap wealthy individuals had not yielded the expected financial gains.

The statement reads in part: “Intelligence at the disposal of the Command indicates plans by suspected bandits to kidnap school children in the State, particularly in Edo North Senatorial District.

“This follows an intercept between suspected bandits, one BAWA (FNU), suspected to be of Fulani extraction from Zamfara State and one NUHU (ENU).

“During the conversation, the duo disclosed’ their plans to kidnap school children in Edo North Senatorial District, as previous attempts to kidnap wealthy individuals had not yielded the expected financial gains.

“To this end, they concluded that abducting school children would attract greater government attention and potentially increase the likelihood of huge ransom payments and concessions.

“Already on 4 June, 2026, one Emmanuel MOMIDU (25yrs) was apprehended , while he was perceived to be surveying Makeke Secondary School at Makeke Community. Akoko Edo LGA,”

The DSS, therefore advised that,
“counter measures be employed around schools in the state with focus on Edo North Senatorial District, to strengthen security around schools and other educational institutions.

“This may include the deployment of personnel to vulnerable schools and communities in collaboration with ESSC, local vigilantes and hunters. as well intensified security patrols in vulnerable areas to enhance surveillance.”
