The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Bauchi State Chapter, has sensitised 50 adolescent girls on menstrual hygiene management and distributed sanitary pads to support their wellbeing and education.
The sensitisation programme, held on Wednesday at Jibrin Aminu Model School in Bauchi, was part of activities marking the 2026 World Menstrual Hygiene Day.
As part of the intervention, the association donated 60 packs of sanitary pads to the school’s pad bank, while the participating students also received sanitary pads to encourage proper menstrual hygiene practices and support girls’ education.
Speaking during the event, the Chairperson of NAWOJ in Bauchi State, Mrs Rashida Yusuf, said the initiative was designed to enhance the knowledge and capacity of adolescent girls on menstrual hygiene management.
She urged the students to reject myths and misconceptions associated with menstruation, noting that cultural taboos often contribute to misinformation and stigma.
“There are several myths surrounding menstruation, including beliefs that discourage people from eating food prepared by menstruating women. Such misconceptions should be discarded because menstruation is a natural biological process,” she said.
Yusuf stressed the importance of maintaining good hygiene during menstrual periods, adding that NAWOJ would continue to organise similar awareness programmes to empower girls with accurate information about menstrual health.
She also encouraged the beneficiaries to share the knowledge gained with their peers and community members.
The Principal of Jibrin Aminu Model School, Mr Mohammed Abdurrahman, commended the association for the initiative, describing it as timely and beneficial to the students.
He assured that the sanitary pads donated to the school’s pad bank would be properly utilised for the benefit of the students.
