President Bola Tinubu has today commissioned a state-of-the-art Infertility and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, describing the facility as a major breakthrough in Nigeria’s reproductive healthcare system.
The President, represented by the Chief Medical Director of ATBUTH, Prof. Yusuf Bara Jibrin, said the centre would strengthen access to advanced fertility treatment, especially for patients in the North-East region.
He explained that the facility is equipped with modern reproductive technologies, including the Computer-Assisted Semen Analysis (CASA) system, which uses automated imaging and software to analyse sperm concentration, motility and morphology within minutes.
Tinubu also disclosed that the centre has an Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) workstation designed to improve fertilisation success in cases of severe male infertility through direct sperm injection into eggs.
According to him, the facility also supports embryo screening for genetic conditions such as sickle cell disease to ensure healthier pregnancies and better family outcomes.
“This centre represents hope, innovation and our commitment to delivering world-class healthcare services to Nigerians,” he stated.
Bauchi State Commissioner for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Sani Mohammed Dambam, described the project as a major boost to healthcare delivery, noting that the technologies installed at the centre rank among the latest in reproductive medicine.
The Director of the Centre, Prof. Sa’idu Kadas, said infertility has become a growing public health concern, revealing that about six out of every 10 patients attending the gynaecology clinic seek treatment for infertility-related issues.
He expressed optimism that the facility would provide renewed hope to couples struggling to conceive.
