Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has won the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primaries conducted on Monday, May 25.
The primaries which was conducted across the 36 states of the country and Abuja, was monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
INEC National Commissioner, Sam Olumekun, also led a team from the commission to monitor the collation of the results in Abuja, which lasted for two days.
Chairman of ADC Presidential Primary Election Committee, Chief Ikechi Emenike, who announced the outcome of the primary, said the former vice president scored a total 1, 846, 370 out of 2, 527, 977 members who voted in the primary, to defeat his co-contestants, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi and Mallam Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.
Chief Emenike disclosed that Amaechi secored 504, 117 votes while Hayatu-Deen secured 177, 120 votes.
According to him, 3, 113, 599 were registered during the ADC’s membership registration, which was submitted to INEC.
He said the committee worked with integrity, commitment and fairness, adding that the figures computed were from Chairmen who conducted the primaries at the states.
Chief Emenike appealed for unity among party members Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen, however rejected the outcome of the primaries, alleging rigging.
Amaechi in a statement on X, said the result did “not reflect the values that the ADC had pledged to uphold, to rescue Nigerians from the impunity and gross mismanagement that our country is currently facing in the hands of the ruling party.”
He said he had initially agreed to accept the outcome “if the process was free, fair, and transparent, and I stand by my word.”
Hayatu-Deen on his part, also alleged widespread vote rigging, which he said he observed himself.
The result showed that Atiku won 30 states and Abuja, while Amaechi won in only five and Hayatu-Deen, only one, Kwara State.
