The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has opened up about the emotional realities of living in a polygamous marriage, admitting that his views on having multiple wives have evolved over the years.
Speaking in a viral video circulating on social media, the monarch revealed that he once questioned how men with several wives managed their homes, only to eventually find himself in the same situation.
“I am always shy with the numerous wives I have because when I was younger, I used to criticise people with many wives and wonder how they cope, but see me doing the same today,” he said.
The royal father noted that life sometimes places people in circumstances they once judged from afar.
While he did not fully explain the reasons behind his decision to embrace polygamy, the Ooni suggested that his role as custodian of Yoruba culture and tradition has significantly influenced his personal life and marital choices.
He also hinted that some aspects of his private life may remain undisclosed to the public.
In previous remarks, the monarch had stated that certain decisions regarding marriage were shaped by cultural expectations attached to the throne of Ile-Ife.
The Ooni’s household expanded considerably in 2022 when he married six queens within roughly three months. His wives include Mariam Anako, Elizabeth Akinmuda, Tobiloba Phillips, Ashley Adegoke, Ronke Ademiluyi, and Temitope Adesegun.
