The Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) has canvassed advancing safety excellence in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector. It added that all players and operators should be better aligned and committed to it.
Chairman, MEMAN, Mr. Hubb Stokman, spoke during the association’s webinar with the theme: ‘Mitigating risks and enhancing safety in Nigeria’s petroleum downstream operations, best practices and emerging trends,’ according to a statement on Tuesday.
He recalled that the downstream sector plays a critical role in Nigeria’s economic stability and energy security.
He stated that, however, it is also a sector that operates with inherent risks ranging from product handling and transportation to storage and retail operations.
He added that these risks demand constant vigilance, innovation and collaboration.
“This webinar has been carefully designed to bring together key stakeholders, regulators, operators, enforcement agencies and the broader community to share insights, examine current challenges and collectively explore practical solutions.
“We believe that safety is not the responsibility of any single organization. It’s a shared obligation that requires alignment, transparency and continuous improvement across the entire industry,” he said.
He noted that the technical presentations on process safety and asset integrity during the webinar were areas that are fundamental to preventing incidents and ensuring operational reliability.
He recalled that the panel session provided a platform for robust discussions on critical issues such as fire safety, emerging response, regulatory compliance and building a strong safety culture within our organizations.
“We remain committed to promoting global best practices, strengthening the industry standards and supporting initiatives that enhance safety performance across Nigeria’s downstream sector.
“We recognize that as an industry evolves, with new technologies, changing market dynamics and increasing operator complexity, our approach to safety must also evolve. Safety is not just about compliance, it’s about people, it’s about protecting lives, safeguarding assets, preserving the environment and maintaining public trust.
“Every incident prevented is a life potentially saved and every improvement made contributes to a more resilient and sustainable industry,” he said.
