2027: Ibadan Summit signals new phase in Nigeria’s political evolution – Lagos PDP

Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has praised the outcome Ibadan Summit.

In a statement by its publicity secretary, Dr. Christopher Odianarewo, the party said the declaration at the Summit reaffirmed Lagos PDP’s commitment to the broader national struggle for democratic restoration and good governance.

It said: “Deliberations were frank, extensive, and solution driven, reflecting a shared understanding that the survival of Nigeria’s democracy and the wellbeing of over 200 million citizens are at stake.

“At the end of the summit, participants issued what is now known as the Ibadan Declaration, a communiqué that encapsulates the collective position and strategic direction of opposition forces in Nigeria.

“Central to the declaration is a firm rejection of any attempt to entrench a one party state. The opposition leaders resolved to defend Nigeria’s multi-party democracy and resist all forms of political domination that undermine pluralism and constitutional order.

“The summit further resolved that opposition parties will actively contest the 2027 general elections, rejecting any perceived attempt to impose a predetermined presidential outcome.

“In a significant show of unity and strategic foresight, leaders also agreed to work towards presenting a consensus presidential candidate, a move aimed at consolidating opposition strength and offering Nigerians a credible alternative.

“A major highlight of the communiqué was the strong stance taken on electoral integrity. The summit expressed a vote of no confidence in the current leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), citing concerns over neutrality and credibility.

“It called for urgent institutional reforms, including a comprehensive review of the Electoral Act 2026 to safeguard the sanctity of elections.

“Equally, the summit condemned the alleged harassment and detention of political actors on bailable offences, describing such actions as inimical to democratic participation and inclusivity. A call was made for the immediate release of affected individuals to ensure a level playing field.

“The Ibadan summit also acknowledged the resilience of Nigerians who continue to endure hardship with remarkable courage.

“It called on citizens to align with opposition efforts in reclaiming the nation from what was described as “state capture” and governance failure.

“In a show of appreciation, participants commended the hospitality and leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde and the people of Oyo State for hosting what has now become an epochal political event in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“Lagos State featured prominently at the summit, with a strong delegation that included party elders, stakeholders, and executives.

“Their participation reaffirmed Lagos PDP’s commitment to the broader national struggle for democratic restoration and good governance.

“The National Summit of Opposition Political Parties in Ibadan will be remembered as more than just a political gathering. It is the birth of a renewed coalition, a strategic alliance forged in the interest of national salvation.

“As Nigeria inches closer to the 2027 general elections, the resolutions reached in Ibadan signal a new phase in the country’s political evolution, one defined by unity of purpose, strategic collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to democratic ideals.”
