Fake Job Interview Turns Robbery Trap in Lagos, Police Nab Suspect

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a suspect linked to a disturbing robbery scheme that targeted unsuspecting job seekers in the Magodo area of Lagos.

The incident, which gained widespread attention after a viral video surfaced online last week, exposed a growing trend of sophisticated scams preying on desperate employment seekers. In the footage shared on April 10 by X user @General_Somto, victims were seen in distress, some clutching their heads as they recounted how they were deceived and robbed under the guise of a job interview.

One victim, speaking in the video, issued a stark warning to others. “Nigerians, let’s be careful out there… Not all job offers are legit. We went for a job interview in Magodo, Lagos only to be robbed. They took our phones, money, and everything we had on us,” she said.

According to accounts from victims and eyewitnesses, the operation appeared credible at first. The supposed interview was conducted in a well-organised setting, giving no immediate indication of foul play. However, the situation took a turn when applicants were asked to briefly step outside. Upon returning, they discovered their personal belongings—including phones, cash, and other valuables—had vanished.

Confirming the development in a statement issued on Sunday via its official X handle, the police said investigations are ongoing. Authorities revealed that one suspect is currently in custody, while efforts are underway to apprehend other members of the syndicate who remain at large.

“The Command confirms that the incident captured in the viral video is under investigation. One suspect is currently in Police custody, while efforts are ongoing to arrest other fleeing suspects and bring all those involved to justice,” the statement read.

The police have since urged residents to exercise caution when responding to job offers, particularly those sourced online. Job seekers were advised to verify the authenticity of companies through official channels, avoid unfamiliar or isolated interview venues, and inform trusted contacts before attending such engagements.

The incident has reignited concerns over rising unemployment-linked scams in Lagos, with many calling for stricter measures to curb fraudulent recruitment practices and better protect vulnerable job seekers.
