Several persons have been killed and others abducted following an attack by suspected bandits on Bunkasau village in Zarummai ward of Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The attack, which occurred late on Friday night, threw the community into chaos as the assailants, said to be about 80 in number, stormed the village on motorcycles and opened fire on residents.
A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, said the gunmen operated for hours, killing an unspecified number of people and abducting several others, mostly women.
The attackers were also reported to have rustled livestock belonging to the villagers before fleeing the scene.
“As we speak, many residents are still missing, and efforts are ongoing to locate them,” the source said, while calling on both the Federal and Zamfara State Governments to urgently deploy security personnel to the area.
Confirming the incident, the Zamfara State Police Command said it had deployed operatives to restore normalcy, though it noted that the exact number of casualties could not yet be ascertained.
The police also urged residents to provide timely and accurate information that could aid security agencies in tracking the perpetrators and preventing further attacks.
