The Lagos State Government has announced a temporary traffic diversion across parts of Lagos Island in preparation for the 2026 Fanti Carnival scheduled for Monday, April 6.
As contained in a public statement by the Ministry of Information and Strategy, several major roads will be cordoned off from 7:00 a.m. to ensure a smooth and secure celebration of the cultural event.
According to the statement, affected routes include King George V Road at the junction by Mobil Filling Station, Onikan Roundabout inbound to TBS, Flagstaff House inbound to TBS, Outer Marina by State House inbound to TBS, Campbell Street by the Old Defence Building, and Catholic Mission Street near St. Nicholas Hospital.
According to the government, the diversion becomes necessary to guarantee public safety and create adequate space for carnival activities, which typically attract large crowds and participants.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, (LASTMA) has outlined alternative routes for motorists. Vehicles approaching from Obalende towards Onikan Roundabout will be redirected to Zone 2, while those coming from Bonny Camp towards McEwen Bridge, as well as traffic descending from Flagstaff House, will be diverted via Obalende Bridge. Similarly, motorists from Outer Marina heading toward TBS will also be rerouted through Obalende Bridge.
The statement advised residents and commuters to plan their journeys ahead of time and consider alternative routes to avoid delays.
The government also expressed regret over any inconvenience the closures may cause, urging the public to cooperate with traffic officials as Lagos prepares to host the vibrant cultural spectacle.
