Former Super Eagles midfielder and 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner, Henry Nwosu, has died. He passed away few months to his 63rd birthday.
The news of his death was announced on Saturday morning by ex-Nigerian international and fellow 1980 AFCON winner, Segun Odegbami, via a post on his Facebook page.
According to Odegbami, the former Green Eagles star passed away at about 4:00 a.m. at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, Lagos, where he had been receiving treatment.
Odegbami revealed that Nwosu had been in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit since Wednesday after battling for his life for several days.
“It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to be the conveyor of the news of the death of Henry Nwosu MON,” Odegbami wrote.
“After five days in hospital battling for his life, the one I call ‘Youngest Millionaire’ passed on at 4:00 a.m. this morning at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, where he had been in Intensive Care since Wednesday,” Odegbami stated.
Nwosu’s death came few days after the demise of former Super Eagles coach, Adegboye Onigbinde.
Nwosu was a member of Nigeria’s historic Green Eagles squad that won the country’s first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980 on home soil.
