NUPCPS Urges Government to Address Unmet Pensioners’ Demands

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme (NUPCPS) has called on the government to urgently address the outstanding demands of its members, many of whom are reportedly struggling to survive despite years of dedicated service.
The appeal was made during the union’s 2026 anniversary celebration, held on Friday, February 27, 2026, across state capitals nationwide.

Speaking on behalf of members, the Lagos State Council Chairman, Comrade Michael Omisande, whose members staged a congress at Oshodi, expressed concern that the government has yet to fulfill key obligations to pensioners. He urged the Director-General of the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC), Mr. Babalola Obilana, to take decisive action on pending pension-related issues affecting retirees.

Marking the ninth anniversary of the union’s establishment and affiliation, Omisande warned that pensioners may be compelled to embark on peaceful protests if LASPEC continues to delay the implementation and payment of approved pension increases.

Speaking further, he stated the union is now demanding the immediate clearance of outstanding arrears. Omisande cited the case of 60 retirees from Lagos State University of Education, Otto-Ijanikin, who retired in 2023 but have yet to receive their entitlements. He stated that 30 of the affected retirees have since died, leaving their families in financial distress.

“ We want our backlog to be cleared immediately. 60 of our members who retired from lAGOS State University of Education, Otto Ijanikin, in year 2023 till date havre not been paid, out of which 30 of the retiree have died leaving their families in abject poverty. If by the end of March 2026 the LASPEC could not determine the cost of implementing the accrued increase and pay all the understanding, we shall call out all the pensioners to embark on protest to press home our demand,’ he stated.

Omisande, however issued a final appeal to LASPEC to determine the cost of implementing the accrued pension increases and settle all outstanding payments by the end of March 2026. Failing this, he warned, the union would mobilize pensioners across the state to stage a protest to press home their demands.

Meanwhile, the chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC) Lagos State, Comrade Agnes Sessie, has vowed to take up the battle for the implementation of Pension increases for Retirees under the contributory Pension scheme (CPS) in the State.

While speaking at Oshodi Open Congress Day, Comrade Sessi said the CPS Pensioners deserve to get the pension increases like their federal counterparts, adding that a political solution would also be adopted.

She said the Labour Movement would use the election year to renegotiate for another minimum wage for Lagos State Workers and also canvass for pension increase implementation for CPS Pensioners.

Comrade Sessie commended the efforts of Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu in the running of affairs of the State.

The open congress day is in commemoration of the birth of Nigeria Union of Pensioners, contributory Pension scheme, NUPCPS, in Nigeria on 27 February, 2017.

The theme of this year’s celebration is Freedom of Association, a fundamental human right in Nigeria.
